Love, sex and romance are often sold as a package deal. Yet, many of these elements are missing in porn. Sex becomes a production, scenes and performance. An act of a team of director, writers and characters who use their lens to tell a story. Their gaze creates what we see.
Similar to romance novels written by majority women writers for a female readership, we're allowed a window into desire, intimacy, sexual exploration, romance and taboos. We're introduced to a new gaze; a way of understanding sexuality and desire through plot and characters.
So what's the biggest difference? We know "they" who control the gaze control the narrative. Romance novels written for a female readership are artifacts to explore many of the elements in female sexuality. These authors afford us an opportunity to understand sex through a woman's point of view.
